Building a hero tree

Whenever I start to consider how to build my hero tree, I first ask what I want to achieve and then look right at the bottom of my available tree to see what I need to max out to achieve it.   I then add points from the top down BUT the most minimum possible to open up the elements I want.

Building troops for success

Nerfed? Enough troops to protect yourself against that next rally or just want enough to be able to stand alone for a bit and not worry about being zero'd?

There is some uncertainty with the new T5 troops as to how the nerf is managed... Ok.. NERF= the situation where the number of lower tier (T)  troops causes a bad balance that allows an attacker to wipe you out easily.  There is a calculation and you can look up a nerf calculator but there is an easier way...

Train T2 and T4 troops - yes, ignore T1 and T3 -  but keep the ratio of troops to 10 T2 to every 1 T4 troops. This is the ideal 10:1 ratio although you could go to a maximum of 12:1

TROOP TYPES
You need a spread so get them all opened up in the research trees.  Don't worry too much if they aren't opened yet as you can build on later but maintain the 10:1 ratio.

T2 infantry are Hoplites, Peltasts and Axemen.
T2 ranged are Skirmish Archers, Rangers and Axe Throwers.
T2 cavalry are Light Cavalry, Scythed Chariots and Marauders.

T4 infantry are Immortals, Legionnaires and Valkyries.
T4 ranged are Marksmen, Dianas and Slayers
T4 cavalry are War Elephant, Cataphracts and Juggernauts.

NUMBERS
If you want to safely join rallys or be unshielded, you need to have 3 things..
1) Defence gear
2) Defence research
3) The right troop numbers

Although we have seen specific trap accounts winning (you will hear the term Cap or Capping which means capturing the enemy hero) with lower numbers of troops, unless you are specifically looking to be a trap, you need numbers in your side.

Our recommended magic number is 3.2 billion troops(it used to be lower but with the bigger marches, it is better safe than sorry) .  This effectively means you need 290,000,000 T4 troops and 2,900,000,000 T2

In reality, during a rally, you can always donate troops then port away so you are only really worried about the solo attacks. For this, you could get away with the 2 billion we previously recommended. The numbers here would be nearer 180,000,000 T4 and 1,800,000,000 T2.

For gear, you need a mixed set.   The one that has been tried and tested but depends on good research, the right gems and the right numbers is:
Head: Frostlords
Body :Imperial Mantle
Feet, weapon and one accessory: Frostlords
Then the important one, 2 Kunoichi's Kunai

Some improvements can be gained by mixing in some Obsidian gear to gain defence if you have it.

GEMS
Gem for defence and Attack debuff. I add a couple of Rally debuff gems as well but they are only useful if you are trying to get rallys on you.
